Mission Statement
Food is the foundation of human civilization. Agriculture gave our nomadic hunter-gatherer ancestors the opportunity to plant the seed for the empires that would shape the world as we know it. But abundance has led to excess. Humanity’s relationship with food has been distorted by our relationship with capitalism, encouraging producers and retailers to put profits above quality and quantity. This drive for greater income has led to poor practices in all stages of food production and consumption.
This webzine sheds light on food-related issues to educate readers and decrease the knowledge gap regarding food production and preparation. The availability of processed ready-to-eat foods has formed a distance between food origins/preparation and the consumer, leading to an increase in food waste and the cost of eating healthy. We will also discuss current and future problems, like the persistent effects of COVID-19 and the Canadian government’s role in regulating agriculture.
The Upstream Battle To Keep Salmon Populations Afloat in B.C. examines how government regulation can affect agriculture, and how its complexity rivals the delicate balance between humankind and nature.
The Disconnect Between the Food Source and the Consumer explores how people have distanced themselves from the food they eat, creating a knowledge gap in regards to healthy foods and food origins.
Food Loss and Waste brings to light the large amounts of food that end up in landfills each day.
What is the Cost of Healthy Eating? explains the difficulty in affording healthy foods on a tight budget.
Was COVID-19 a Cooking Instructor? studies the effects of the pandemic on people’s relationship with food preparation.
